Dialogue
Hedging your Bets: How to act in, learn from,
and prepare for crisis events

The discussion will open with the proposal that Bet Hedging:

• (a) is a point of overlap between NDM and RE,
• (b) it is a general finding for all human systems,
• (c) it is necessary part of coping with any crisis/surprise event (during, before, and after, such as the current pandemic and recent Texas energy collapse, unexpected consequences of emerging technologies),
• and (d) it is a general property for all adaptive systems in the biological sphere, which includes people and human systems.

David Woods will present this perspective followed by a panel who will comment on Bet Hedging in light of current surprise events. The goal is to start a dialogue to identify issues that could become sessions at the joint RE-NDM-FonCSI-ICSI symposium. These sessions could focus on specific themes and puzzles about Bet Hedging and on how bet hedging findings/strategies reveal post-shock opportunities in different specific industries. We invite participants to view a 6 minute video David prepared that proposes a synthesis of findings from NDM and CSE studies as a launching point — is this synthesis reasonable or in need of revision?

What can the REA community learn from ATM
in dealing with Covid-19?

By now, you are surely overwhelmed by the notion of "Covid". But this is not the only buzzword that has been relentlessly circulated in the media in the past six months. More often than not, the word "Covid-19" was accompanied by yet another word "resilience", or, "resilience" somehow connected with words such as "surprise", "uncertainty", "complexity", "adaptive capacity", "flexibility", "scalability", "interdependence" and "sustainability", to name a few.

While intuitively all of these words and their relationships make sense, the question is how they have all played out during the Covid-19 crisis?

In this webinar, we have invited leading Air Traffic Management (ATM) figures to discuss the good, the bad, and the ugly of ATM resilience management (within a wider aviation context) in light of Covid-19. The panellists will reflect on the ATM industry good practices and lessons learned related to the implementation of theoretical foundations of Resilience Engineering (RE). In addition, the panellists will shed light on practical research questions that, in their view, may help in bridging the gap between RE theory and practice.

The webinar will be moderated by Milena Studic (skeyes) and Anthony Smoker (Lund University).

Tools of Practice: Points of Convergence and Divergence

The tools developed by NDM researchers
and the tools developed by RE researchers.

This webinar will focus on comparing the tools for research and practice between the two communities. While some tools, including knowledge elicitation methods, have been adapted by both communities, there are many that are unique to each one. Attendees will be provided with descriptions of the tools developed so far by each of the two communities. The speakers will highlight a few of these tools from NDM and RE, briefly discuss existing overlaps and differences, and facilitate a discussion with the attendees on potential opportunities for convergence.

Survey : understand better the decision-making under uncertainty and better plan the Symposium

It is widely accepted that there are important synergies between the disciplines of Naturalistic Decision-Making and Resilience Engineering. Over the coming months we will be exploring these synergies further with you, analysing our collective efforts in the face of COVID-19, and developing a means by which we can work together to address this and future challenges. This exploration will culminate in a Symposium in June 2021. The event will bring together (physically and/or virtually) the communities of both disciples and is supported by the Fondation pour une Culture de Sécurité Industrielle (FONCSI) and the Institut pour une Culture de Sécurité Industrielle (ICSI). In order to create an event best suited to you, we seek your input. If you could give three minutes of your time to answer a few questions we will be able to build a Symposium of great value to everyone.
